Prime Minister Hun Manet Directs Planning for Public Bus Lanes on New Suburban Roads

Phnom Penh, June 17, 2024 – In response to the growing urban population and increased commuting needs, Prime Minister Hun Manet has directed the Phnom Penh Capital Administration to plan public bus lanes along new suburban and satellite city roads, emphasizing the prioritization of public transportation.

The directive was issued during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of twin flyovers at the intersection of Hun Sen Blvd. and National Road No. 2, which marks the border between Phnom Penh and Kandal Province, held on the morning of June 17, 2024.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Manet highlighted the importance of forward-thinking in urban development, particularly in transportation infrastructure to accommodate future growth. "As Phnom Penh expands and the economy develops, there will be a substantial increase in road travel. It is essential that the design of new roads, especially those in emerging suburban areas, includes dedicated lanes for public buses," he stated.

The Prime Minister stressed that the expansion of public transportation is critical not only for reducing traffic congestion but also for promoting sustainable urban mobility. He pointed out that the upcoming twin flyover project is crucial for improving connectivity between central Phnom Penh, Takhmao City, southern suburbs, and the new Techo International Airport, which is expected to see significant daily traffic.

"Future road developments must accommodate the increased travel demands expected over the next 15 to 20 years. It's not just about building roads but planning them to handle future capacities," he added.

Prime Minister Manet further emphasized that maintaining peace and stability is key to ongoing development across all sectors. "No matter how advanced our infrastructure becomes, it is the peace and stability of the nation that ensure its utilisation," he remarked.

This initiative reflects the government's commitment to enhancing public transport facilities in line with global urban planning trends and environmental considerations.
